Writer Alert

I was at Miss Snark’s blog and read that an agent listed on WriterBeware’s 20 Worst Agent Lists complained to the webhost of AbsoluteWrite.com and succeeded in shutting down AbsoluteWrite.com. It seems Jenna Glatzer only had an hour warning before the site was taken down by the host.

The agent is Barbara Bauer and her web site is www.bbla.com and Miss Snark does a great job of identifying why Bauer may have been on the Writer Beware list in the first place.

The complete list of the 20 worst agents is available at http://www.sfwa.org/beware/twentyworst.html

According to Writers Beware, the list was compiled using a variety of criteria including the number of complaints WB received from writers about the agent, the agent charges writers for services before a sale is made, and the agent doesn’t have a significant track record of sales to a commercial (advance-paying) publisher.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again — writers shouldn’t have to pay to be published. I will add that writers shouldn’t have to pay to be represented either.
